ABOUT ME

Alright, so... who am I?

Overall, I am a Digital Compositor & 3D Generalist from Germany, currently based & working in London on visual effects for feature films, with about a decade of personal vfx experience to offer.

I started entering the visual effects industry as early as 2008, with my first vfx internship, then followed that up with being accepted at the Film Academy Baden-Wuerttemberg & the associated Institute of Animation in 2009, with a focus in Effects & Animation.
While I was studying there I collaborated with fellow students on various assignments & film projects, and directed a few on my own, several of which went on to collect industry accolades & awards.

During studies, and then afterwards following my graduation in 2015, I have worked for a variety of visual effects companies since, both in Germany and the United Kingdom:

Due to the large variety of projects I have gained experience in advertising, television, short & feature film work, ranging from simple technical fixes to full-blown CG animated extravaganzas, even doing native stereoscopic work both from a creative & technical standpoint.
Based upon the involvement in certain projects and types of software & techniques, I've also given a few presentations & courses at a selection of conferences and conventions.

The personal involvment has led to being rewarded with a few accolades myself - My graduation project 'Citipati' received both a VES Award as well as an Annie Award, and my participation in the decorated 2016 ad 'John Lewis #BustertheBoxer' led to receiving a second VES Award in 2017.

As of 2017 I also became, following a personal invitation, an official member of the Visual Effects Society.

THE EARLY DAYS

So when did it all start?

Back then in the year 2000, not long after the family came into possession of its very first digital video camera, it had become a main source of attention for a 12 year old boy. While at first it was only treated like an expensive toy, the addition of an editing software made the ordeal of filming much more interesting - cutting the family's home videos became the new hobby.

But when stop-motion animated films using LEGOs started gaining traction online, I felt inspired to give this filming technique a try myself. Although it felt tedious on the first few attempts, the seeds had been planted, and following more tests my first LEGO short was completed in 2001 - even if it was a far cry from a good film.
I continued on making short films with LEGOs, improving the quality, and soon joined the online brickfilm community afterwards. With every project I kept on experimenting with new methods & techniques, exploring the possibilities within the limitations of the software that was readily available. A few of those films even had some success at smaller festivals & contests within the brickfilm community, which further bolstered the creativity.

Over the course of the years, the focus gradually shifted from creating animated films to rather using said animations in order to explore vfx; by the time I switched from brickfilms to live action, I had already attempted to perform CG set extension work for LEGO scenes. But in order to pursue the goal of a vfx career, the choice had to be made. Luckily several colleagues at school were quickly convinced & eager to join in on the fun of shooting some weird projects, just for the shenanigans alone.

Shortly before I finished high school, I was approached to join in on the fan film "Star Wars: Threads of Destiny", based on some of my work online; and I was curious to join in & contribute to some other's project for a change - a decision which would lead to a 6.5-year production period & becoming one of the film's lead artists by the end of its prostproduction.

Therefore, by the time I had received my high school degree not long after that decision, the path had in a sense already been laid out towards a future vfx career...
